Vishnu Sahasranama (Selected Verses)

शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् । प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥१॥

śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śaśivarṇaṃ caturbhujam | prasannavadanaṃ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye ||1||

Meditate on Vishnu, who wears white garments, who is radiant as the moon, with four arms, a serene face - for the removal of all obstacles.

यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण संसारबन्धनात् । मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो नान्यः पन्था विमुक्तये ॥२॥

yasya smaraṇamātreṇa saṃsārabandhanāt | mucyate sarvapāpebhyo nānyaḥ panthā vimuktaye ||2||

By the mere remembrance of whom, one is freed from the bonds of samsara and from all sins - there is no other path to liberation.

ओं विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः । भूतकृद्भूतभृद्भावो भूतात्मा भूतभावनः ॥३॥

oṃ viśvaṃ viṣṇurvaṣaṭkāro bhūtabhavyabhavatprabhuḥ | bhūtakṛdbhūtabhṛdbhāvo bhūtātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ ||3||

Om. He is the universe, He is Vishnu, the offering to the sacred fire, the lord of past, present and future. He is the creator of beings, the sustainer of beings, the source of all, the self of all beings, the one who causes all beings to flourish.

पूतात्मा परमात्मा च मुक्तानां परमा गतिः । अव्ययः पुरुषः साक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञोऽक्षर एव च ॥४॥

pūtātmā paramātmā ca muktānāṃ paramā gatiḥ | avyayaḥ puruṣaḥ sākṣī kṣetrajño’kṣara eva ca ||4||

He is the pure Self, the supreme Self, the supreme goal of the liberated. He is imperishable, the primordial person, the witness, the knower of the field, and the immutable.
