Aditya Hridayam

ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम् । रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥ दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम् । उपगम्याब्रवीद्राममगस्त्यो भगवानृषिः ॥१॥

tato yuddhapariśrāntaṃ samare cintayā sthitam | rāvaṇaṃ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam || daivataiśca samāgamya draṣṭumabhyāgato raṇam | upagamyābravīdrāmamagastyo bhagavānṛṣiḥ ||1||

Then, seeing Rama exhausted by battle and standing in thought, with Ravana before him ready to fight, the blessed sage Agastya, who had come with the gods to witness the war, approached Rama and spoke.

राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम् । येन सर्वानरीन्वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि ॥ आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् । जयावहं जपेन्नित्यमक्षय्यं परमं शिवम् ॥२॥

rāma rāma mahābāho śṛṇu guhyaṃ sanātanam | yena sarvānarīnvatsa samare vijayiṣyasi || ādityahṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam | jayāvahaṃ japennityamakṣayyaṃ paramaṃ śivam ||2||

O Rama, mighty-armed, listen to this eternal secret, by which you shall conquer all enemies in battle. This holy Aditya Hridayam destroys all foes, brings victory when recited daily, and is inexhaustible and supremely auspicious.

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् । चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम् ॥ रश्मिमन्तं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम् । पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥३॥

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalyaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam | cintāśokapraśamanamāyurvardhanamuttamam || raśmimantaṃ samudyantaṃ devāsuranamaskṛtam | pūjayasva vivasvantaṃ bhāskaraṃ bhuvaneśvaram ||3||

It is the most auspicious of all auspicious things, the destroyer of all sins, the quieter of worry and grief, the supreme increaser of life. Worship the radiant, rising sun, adored by gods and demons - the shining one, the lord of the worlds.

सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः । एष देवासुरगणाँल्लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः ॥ एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः । महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः ॥४॥

sarvadevātmako hyeṣa tejasvī raśmibhāvanaḥ | eṣa devāsuragaṇām̐llokān pāti gabhastibhiḥ || eṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śivaḥ skandaḥ prajāpatiḥ | mahendro dhanadaḥ kālo yamaḥ somo hyapāṃ patiḥ ||4||

He embodies the essence of all gods, radiant, nourishing the world through his rays. He protects the worlds of gods and demons with his beams. He is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, Indra, Kubera, Kala, Yama, Soma, and Varuna.

पितरो वसवः साध्या ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः । वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः ॥ आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान् । सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः ॥५॥

pitaro vasavaḥ sādhyā hyaśvinau maruto manuḥ | vāyurvahniḥ prajāprāṇa ṛtukartā prabhākaraḥ || ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhastimān | suvarṇasadṛśo bhānurhiraṇyaretā divākaraḥ ||5||

He is the Pitris, Vasus, Sadhyas, Ashvins, Maruts, Manu, Vayu, Agni, Prana of all beings, the maker of seasons, the light-giver. He is Aditya, Savita, Surya, Khaga, Pusha, Gabhastiman, the golden-hued Bhānu, Hiranyareta, and Divakara.

हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान् । तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान् ॥ हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः । अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः ॥६॥

haridaśvaḥ sahasrārciḥ saptasaptirmarīcimān | timironmathanaḥ śambhustvaṣṭā mārtāṇḍa aṃśumān || hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śiśirastapano bhāskaro raviḥ | agnigarbho’diteḥ putraḥ śaṅkhaḥ śiśiranāśanaḥ ||6||

He rides green horses, has a thousand rays, seven steeds, and is full of light. He is the destroyer of darkness, the auspicious one, the cosmic carpenter, the risen sun, the radiant one. He is the golden womb, the cool one, the heater, the illuminator, the sun. He carries fire within, is the son of Aditi, and the destroyer of cold.

व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः । घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः ॥ आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः । कविर्विश्वो महातेजाः रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः ॥७॥

vyomanāthastamobhedī ṛgyajuḥsāmapāragaḥ | ghanavṛṣṭirapāṃ mitro vindhyavīthīplavaṅgamaḥ || ātapī maṇḍalī mṛtyuḥ piṅgalaḥ sarvatāpanaḥ | kavirviśvo mahātejāḥ raktaḥ sarvabhavodbhavaḥ ||7||

Lord of the sky, piercer of darkness, master of the Vedas, he brings rain as the friend of waters, swiftly moving across the Vindhya paths. He is heat, the cosmic sphere, death, the tawny one, the scorcher of all. He is the seer, the universe, the greatly radiant, the red one, the source of all existence.

नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः । तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन्नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः । ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः ॥८॥

nakṣatragrahatārāṇāmadhipo viśvabhāvanaḥ | tejasāmapi tejasvī dvādaśātmannamo’stu te || namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ | jyotirgaṇānāṃ pataye dinādhipataye namaḥ ||8||

Lord of stars, planets, and constellations, creator of the universe, the most radiant among all radiance, O twelve-formed one, salutations to you. Salutations to the eastern mountain and the western mountain. Salutations to the lord of all celestial bodies and the lord of the day.

जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः । नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः ॥ नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः । नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः ॥९॥

jayāya jayabhadrāya haryaśvāya namo namaḥ | namo namaḥ sahasrāṃśo ādityāya namo namaḥ || nama ugrāya vīrāya sāraṅgāya namo namaḥ | namaḥ padmaprabodhāya mārtāṇḍāya namo namaḥ ||9||

Salutations again and again to the victorious one, to the lord of auspicious victory, to the one with green horses. Salutations to the thousand-rayed sun, to Aditya. Salutations to the fierce one, the heroic one, the variegated one. Salutations to the awakener of lotuses, to the risen sun.

ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यायादित्यवर्चसे । भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः ॥ तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने । कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः ॥१०॥

brahmeśānācyuteśāya sūryāyādityavarcase | bhāsvate sarvabhakṣāya raudrāya vapuṣe namaḥ || tamoghnāya himaghnāya śatrughnāyāmitātmane | kṛtaghnaghnāya devāya jyotiṣāṃ pataye namaḥ ||10||

Salutations to the lord of Brahma, Ishana, and Acyuta, to Surya of solar splendor, to the shining one who consumes all, to the fierce form. Salutations to the destroyer of darkness, destroyer of snow, destroyer of enemies, the infinite self, the slayer of the ungrateful, the lord of all lights.

तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे । नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे ॥ नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः । पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः ॥११॥

taptacāmīkarābhāya vahnaye viśvakarmaṇe | namastamo’bhinighnāya rucaye lokasākṣiṇe || nāśayatyeṣa vai bhūtaṃ tadeva sṛjati prabhuḥ | pāyatyeṣa tapatyeṣa varṣatyeṣa gabhastibhiḥ ||11||

Salutations to the one who shines like molten gold, to the fire, to the cosmic architect. Salutations to the destroyer of darkness, to the radiant one, the witness of the world. He destroys all beings and creates them again. He protects, warms, and showers his rays upon all.

एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः । एष एवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम् ॥ वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च । यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः ॥१२॥

eṣa supteṣu jāgarti bhūteṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ | eṣa evāgnihotraṃ ca phalaṃ caivāgnihotriṇām || vedāśca kratavaścaiva kratūnāṃ phalameva ca | yāni kṛtyāni lokeṣu sarva eṣa raviḥ prabhuḥ ||12||

He remains awake even when all beings sleep, standing firm within all creatures. He is the fire-sacrifice and the fruit of the sacrifice. The Vedas, the rituals, and their rewards - all that is done in the worlds, all of this is Ravi, the Lord.

एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च । कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव ॥ पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम् । एतत्त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यसि ॥१३॥

enamāpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāreṣu bhayeṣu ca | kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścinnāvasīdati rāghava || pūjayasvainamekāgro devadevaṃ jagatpatim | etattriguṇitaṃ japtvā yuddheṣu vijayiṣyasi ||13||

One who recites this hymn in times of distress, difficulty, wilderness, and fear never comes to ruin, O Rama. Worship him with single-minded devotion, the god of gods, the lord of the universe. Chanting this three times, you shall be victorious in battle.

अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि । एवमुक्त्वा तदागस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम् ॥ एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा । धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान् ॥१४॥

asmin kṣaṇe mahābāho rāvaṇaṃ tvaṃ vadhiṣyasi | evamuktvā tadāgastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam || etacchrutvā mahātejā naṣṭaśoko’bhavattadā | dhārayāmāsa suprīto rāghavaḥ prayatātmavān ||14||

In this very moment, O mighty-armed one, you shall slay Ravana. Having spoken thus, the sage Agastya departed as he had come. Hearing this, the greatly radiant Rama became free of sorrow. With a joyful heart and composed mind, he absorbed this teaching.

आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवान् । त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान् ॥ रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत् । सर्वयत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत् ॥१५॥

ādityaṃ prekṣya japtvā tu paraṃ harṣamavāptavān | trirācamya śucirbhūtvā dhanurādāya vīryavān || rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā yuddhāya samupāgamat | sarvayatnena mahatā vadhe tasya dhṛto’bhavat ||15||

Looking at the sun and reciting the hymn, he attained supreme joy. Purifying himself by sipping water three times, the valiant one took up his bow. Seeing Ravana, his spirit uplifted, he advanced toward battle, determined with great effort to slay him.

अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः । निशिचरपतिसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति ॥१६॥

atha raviravadannirīkṣya rāmaṃ muditamanāḥ paramaṃ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ | niśicarapatisaṃkṣayaṃ viditvā suragaṇamadhyagato vacastvareti ||16||

Then the Sun, beholding Rama with a joyful heart and greatly delighted, knowing that the destruction of the lord of night-wanderers was near, standing amidst the hosts of gods, urged him on, saying: “Hasten!”
