Durga Chalisa
|| दुर्गा चालीसा ||
नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी । नमो नमो अम्बे दुःख हरनी ॥१॥
namo namo durge sukh karanī | namo namo ambe duḥkh haranī ||1||
Salutations to you, O Durga, the bestower of happiness. Salutations to you, O Amba, the remover of sorrow.
निराकार है ज्योति तुम्हारी । तिहूँ लोक फैली उजियारी ॥२॥
nirākār hai jyoti tumhārī | tihū~ lok phailī ujiyārī ||2||
Your light is formless, yet it illuminates all the three worlds.
शशि ललाट मुख महाविशाला । नेत्र लाल भृकुटि विकराला ॥३॥
śaśi lalāṭ mukha mahāviśālā | netra lāl bhṛkuṭi vikarālā ||3||
Your forehead shines like the moon, your face is vast, your eyes are red, and your brow is fearsome.
रूप मातु को अधिक सुहावे । दरश करत जन अति सुख पावे ॥४॥
rūpa mātu ko adhik suhāve | daraś karat jan ati sukh pāve ||4||
Your form, O Mother, is supremely pleasing. Those who behold it are filled with great joy.
तुम संसार शक्ति लय कीना । पालन हेतु अन्न धन दीना ॥५॥
tum saṃsār śakti laya kīnā | pālan hetu ann dhan dīnā ||5||
You are the power of the world. For its sustenance, you bestow food and wealth.
अन्नपूर्णा हुई जग पाला । तुम ही आदि सुन्दरी बाला ॥६॥
annapūrṇā huī jag pālā | tum hī ādī sundarī bālā ||6||
As Annapurna, you nourish the world. You are the primordial, beautiful, eternal maiden.
प्रलयकाल सब नाशन हारी । तुम गौरी शिवशंकर प्यारी ॥७॥
pralayakāl sab nāśan hārī | tum gaurī śivaśaṅkar pyārī ||7||
At the time of dissolution, you are the destroyer of all. You are Gauri, beloved of Shiva Shankara.
शिव योगी तुम्हरे गुण गावें । ब्रह्मा विष्णु तुम्हें नित ध्यावें ॥८॥
śiv yogī tumhare guṇ gāveṃ | brahmā viṣṇu tumheṃ nit dhyāveṃ ||8||
Shiva and the yogis sing your glories. Brahma and Vishnu meditate upon you always.
रूप सरस्वती को तुम धारा । दे सुबुद्धि ऋषि-मुनिन उबारा ॥९॥
rūpa sarasvatī ko tum dhārā | de subuddhi ṛṣi-munin ubārā ||9||
Taking the form of Saraswati, you grant wisdom and uplift the sages and seers.
धरा रूप नरसिंह को अम्बा । प्रगट भईं फाड़कर खम्बा ॥१०॥
dharā rūpa narasiṃha ko ambā | pragaṭ bhaī~ phāṛkar khambā ||10||
Taking the form of Narasimha, O Mother, you appeared by tearing apart a pillar.
रक्षा कर प्रह्लाद बचायो । हिरण्याक्ष को स्वर्ग पठायो ॥११॥
rakṣā kar prahlād bacāyo | hiraṇyākṣ ko svarg paṭhāyo ||11||
You protected Prahlada and sent Hiranyakashipu to the abode of death.
लक्ष्मी रूप धरो जग माहीं । श्री नारायण अंग समाहीं ॥१२॥
lakṣmī rūp dharo jag māhī~ | śrī nārāyaṇ aṅg samāhī~ ||12||
You take the form of Lakshmi in the world, resting on the lap of Lord Narayana.
क्षीरसिन्धु में करत विलासा । दयासिन्धु दीजै मन आसा ॥१३॥
kṣīrasindhu meṃ karat vilāsā | dayāsindhu dījai man āsā ||13||
You reside in the ocean of milk. O ocean of compassion, grant my heart’s desire.
हिंगलाज में तुम्हीं भवानी । महिमा अमित न जात बखानी ॥१४॥
hiṅgalāj meṃ tumhī~ bhavānī | mahimā amit na jāt bakhānī ||14||
At Hinglaj, you are Bhavani. Your glory is boundless and cannot be described.
मातंगी अरु धूमावति माता । भुवनेश्वरी बगला सुख दाता ॥१५॥
mātaṅgī aru dhūmāvati mātā | bhuvaneśvarī bagalā sukh dātā ||15||
As Matangi, Dhumavati, Bhuvaneshwari, and Bagalamukhi, you are the giver of happiness.
श्री भैरव तारा जग तारिणी । छिन्न भाल भव दुःख निवारिणी ॥१६॥
śrī bhairav tārā jag tāriṇī | chinna bhāl bhav duḥkh nivāriṇī ||16||
As Bhairavi and Tara, you deliver the world. As Chinnamasta, you remove the sorrows of worldly existence.
केहरि वाहन सोह भवानी । लांगुर वीर चलत अगवानी ॥१७॥
kehari vāhan soh bhavānī | lāṅgur vīr calat agavānī ||17||
Seated upon your lion vehicle, O Bhavani, you are resplendent, with heroic attendants marching before you.
कर में खप्पर-खड्ग विराजै । जाको देख काल डर भाजे ॥१८॥
kar meṃ khappar-khaḍg virājai | jāko dekh kāl ḍar bhāje ||18||
In your hands shine the skull-bowl and the sword. Death himself flees in fear at the sight of them.
सोहै अस्त्र और त्रिशूला । जाते उठत शत्रु हिय शूला ॥१९॥
sohai astra aur triśūlā | jāte uṭhat śatru hiya śūlā ||19||
Your weapons and trident shine brightly, piercing the hearts of your enemies.
नगर कोटि में तुम्हीं विराजत । तिहुंलोक में डंका बाजत ॥२०॥
nagar koṭi meṃ tumhī~ virājat | tihu~lok meṃ ḍaṅkā bājat ||20||
You dwell in every city and fortress. Your glory is proclaimed throughout the three worlds.
शुम्भ निशुम्भ दानव तुम मारे । रक्तबीज शंखन संहारे ॥२१॥
śumbh niśumbh dānav tum māre | raktabīj śaṅkhan saṃhāre ||21||
You slew the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. You destroyed Raktabija and Shankha.
महिषासुर नृप अति अभिमानी । जेहि अघ भार मही अकुलानी ॥२२॥
mahiṣāsur nṛp ati abhimānī | jehi agh bhār mahī akulānī ||22||
The proud king Mahishasura, whose wickedness made the earth tremble -
रूप कराल कालिका धारा । सेन सहित तुम तिहि संहारा ॥२३॥
rūp karāl kālikā dhārā | sen sahit tum tihi saṃhārā ||23||
Taking the fearsome form of Kalika, you destroyed him together with his army.
परी गाढ़ सन्तन पर जब-जब । भई सहाय मातु तुम तब तब ॥२४॥
parī gāṛh santan par jab-jab | bhaī sahāy mātu tum tab-tab ||24||
Whenever your devotees were in great difficulty, O Mother, you came to their aid.
अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका । तब महिमा सब रहें अशोका ॥२५॥
amarapurī aru bāsav lokā | tab mahimā sab rahe~ aśokā ||25||
In the immortal realm and the world of Indra, your glory prevails, and all remain free from sorrow.
ज्वाला में है ज्योति तुम्हारी । तुम्हें सदा पूजें नर-नारी ॥२६॥
jvālā meṃ hai jyoti tumhārī | tumhe~ sadā pūje~ nar-nārī ||26||
In the flame, your light resides. Men and women worship you always.
प्रेम भक्ति से जो यश गावै । दुःख दारिद्र निकट नहिं आवै ॥२७॥
prem bhakti se jo yaś gāvai | duḥkh dāridra nikaṭ nahi~ āvai ||27||
Those who sing your praise with love and devotion - sorrow and poverty never approach them.
ध्यावे तुम्हें जो नर मन लाई । जन्म-मरण ताकौ छुटि जाई ॥२८॥
dhyāve tumhe~ jo nar man lāī | janma-maraṇ tākau chuṭi jāī ||28||
Those who meditate upon you with focused mind - their cycle of birth and death comes to an end.
जोगी सुर मुनि कहत पुकारी । योग न हो बिन शक्ति तुम्हारी ॥२९॥
jogī sur muni kahat pukārī | yog na ho bin śakti tumhārī ||29||
Yogis, gods, and sages proclaim that yoga cannot be attained without your power.
शंकर आचारज तप कीनो । काम अरु क्रोध जीति सब लीनो ॥३०॥
śaṅkar ācāraj tap kīno | kām aru krodh jīti sab līno ||30||
Shankara (Shiva) performed great austerities, conquering desire and anger completely.
निशिदिन ध्यान धरो शंकर को । काहु काल नहिं सुमिरो तुमको ॥३१॥
niśidin dhyān dharo śaṅkar ko | kāhu kāl nahi~ sumiro tumko ||31||
He meditated upon Shankara day and night, yet at no time did he remember you.
शक्ति रूप को मरम न पायो । शक्ति गई तब मन पछितायो ॥३२॥
śakti rūp ko maram na pāyo | śakti gaī tab man pachitāyo ||32||
Not realizing the secret of your power, when his strength left him, he repented in his heart.
शरणागत हुई कीर्ति बखानी । जय जय जय जगदम्ब भवानी ॥३३॥
śaraṇāgat huī kīrti bakhānī | jay jay jay jagadamb bhavānī ||33||
He came to you for refuge and sang your glory. Victory, victory, victory to you, O Jagadamba Bhavani!
भई प्रसन्न आदि जगदम्बा । दई शक्ति नहिं कीन विलम्बा ॥३४॥
bhaī prasann ādi jagadambā | daī śakti nahi~ kīn vilambā ||34||
The primordial Jagadamba became pleased and immediately restored his power without delay.
मोको मातु कष्ट अति घेरो । तुम बिन कौन हरै दुःख मेरो ॥३५॥
moko mātu kaṣṭ ati ghero | tum bin kaun harai duḥkh mero ||35||
I am surrounded by great suffering, O Mother. Without you, who can remove my sorrow?
आशा तृष्णा निपट सतावे । मोह मदादिक सब विनशावै ॥३६॥
āśā tṛṣṇā nipaṭ satāve | moh madādik sab vinaśāve ||36||
Hope and desire torment me greatly. Destroy all my attachment, pride, and such afflictions.
शत्रु नाश कीजै महारानी । सुमिरौं इकचित तुम्हें भवानी ॥३७॥
śatru nāś kījai mahārānī | sumirau~ ikacit tumhe~ bhavānī ||37||
Destroy my enemies, O great Queen. I meditate upon you with single-minded devotion, O Bhavani.
करो कृपा हे मातु दयाला । ऋद्धि-सिद्धि दे करहु निहाला ॥३८॥
karo kṛpā he mātu dayālā | ṛddhi-siddhi de karahu nihālā ||38||
Shower your grace, O compassionate Mother. Grant me prosperity and spiritual powers, and make me blessed.
जब लगि जियउं दया फल पाऊं । तुम्हरो यश मैं सदा सुनाऊं ॥३९॥
jab lagi jiyau~ dayā phal pāū~ | tumharo yaś mai~ sadā sunāū~ ||39||
As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of your compassion. I shall always proclaim your glory.
दुर्गा चालीसा जो नित गावै । सब सुख भोग परमपद पावै ॥४०॥
durgā cālīsā jo nit gāvai | sab sukh bhog parampad pāvai ||40||
Those who recite the Durga Chalisa daily enjoy all happiness and attain the supreme abode.
The Durga Chalisa is a 40-verse hymn in Hindi/Awadhi, traditionally recited during Navaratri and on Tuesdays and Fridays for protection, courage, and the removal of obstacles.
