About this stotra

Guru Ashtakam is an octet (eight verses) composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in praise of his Guru Govinda Pada. It beautifully exemplifies the necessity of a Guru, beseeching the spiritual seeker to bow down to the Lotus Feet of the Guru. Each verse declares that without deep devotion to the spiritual teacher, all material attainments — be it wealth, family, knowledge, fame, power, or even dispassion — are meaningless.

In Hindu tradition, a Guru is the spiritual teacher who imparts the higher knowledge of the Vedas and guides the seeker towards liberation. A Guru is considered self-realized and is revered as the Supreme Absolute itself. The scriptures emphasize that a Guru is absolutely necessary for every aspirant on the spiritual path.

The stotra consists of eight main verses, followed by an additional verse, a phalaśruti (verse describing the benefits of recitation), and a colophon.
