Shiva Mangalashtakam
|| श्री शिवमङ्गलाष्टकम् ||
Translated By P. R. Ramachander Mangala stotras are normally recited at the end of reciting several stotras or the end of singing several songs or at the end of an auspicious function. The devotee wishes auspiciousness to the Lord. Mangalam may also mean good wishes or wishes for a happy ending.
Verse 1
भवाय चन्द्रचूडाय निर्गुणाय गुणात्मने । कालकालाय रुद्राय नीलग्रीवाय मङ्गलम् ॥१॥
Bhavvaya Chandra choodaya, Nirgunaya gunathmane, Kalakalaya rudhraya Neelagreevaya Mangalam. 1 Mangalam to him who has a blue neck,
Who makes things happen, Who wears the crescent of moon, Who is without properties, Who is the soul of good conduct, Who is the death to god of death, And who has a very angry form.
Verse 2
वृषारूढाय भीमाय व्याघ्रचर्माम्बराय च । पशूनां पतये तुभ्यं गौरीकान्ताय मङ्गलम् ॥२॥
Vrusha roodaya bheemaya Vyagra charmambaraya cha, Pasunaam pathaye thubhyam Gowrikanthaya Mangalam. 2 Mangalam to the consort of Gowri,
Who rides on a bull and is gross, Who wears the skin of a tiger, And who is the lord of all beings.
Verse 3
भस्मोद्धूलितदेहाय व्यालयज्ञोपवीतिने । रुद्राक्षमालाभूषाय व्योमकेशाय मङ्गलम् ॥३॥
Bhasmodhulitha dehaya Vyala yagnopaveethine, Rudrakshamala bhooshaya Vyomakesaya Mangalam. 3 Mangalam to him who has the sky as hair,
Whose body is anointed with holy ash, Who wears a holy thread of snake, And who wears the garland of Rudraksha.
Verse 4
सूर्यचन्द्राग्निनेत्राय नमः कैलासवासिने । सच्चिदानन्दरूपाय प्रमथेशाय मङ्गलम् ॥४॥
Soorya chandragni nethraya, Nama kailasa vasine, Satchithananda roopaya Pramadhesaya Mangalam. 4 Mangalam to the god of the impassioned devotee,
Who has sun, moon and fire as his eyes, Who lives on Mount Kailasa, And has the form of real perennial joy.
Verse 5
मृत्युञ्जयाय साम्बाय सृष्टिस्थित्यन्तकारिणे । त्र्यम्बकाय सुशान्ताय त्रिलोकेशाय मङ्गलम् ॥५॥
Mrutyunjayaya sambhaya Srushti sthithyantha karine, Tryambakaya susahanthaya Trilokesaya Mangalam. 5 Mangalam to the Lord of the three worlds,
Who helps us with victory over death, Who is always with Goddess Amba, Who does creation, upkeep and destruction, Who is the lord of Trayambaka, And who is extremely peaceful.
Verse 6
गङ्गाधराय सोमाय नमो हरिहरात्मने । उग्राय त्रिपुरघ्नाय वामदेवाय मङ्गलम् ॥६॥
Gangadharaya somaya Namo hariharathmane, Ugraya tripuragnaya, Vamadevaya Mangalam. 6 Mangalam to the god of the left,
Who carries river Ganga, Who is the moon, Who is the soul of Vishnu and Shiva, Who is very powerful, And who destroyed three cities.
Verse 7
सद्योजाताय शर्वाय भव्यज्ञानप्रदायिने । ईशानाय नमस्तुभ्यं पञ्चवक्त्राय मङ्गलम् ॥७॥
Sadhyojathaya sarvaya Divyajnana pradhayine, Eesanaya namasthubhyam Panchavakthraya Mangalam. 7 Mangalam to him who has seven necks,
Who is instantly born and faces north, Who passes on holy knowledge to people, And who is Lord Shiva whom I salute.
Verse 8
सदाशिवस्वरूपाय नमस्तत्पुरुषाय च । अघोराय च घोराय महादेवाय मङ्गलम् ॥८॥
Sada shiva swaroopaya Nama sthath purushaya cha, Aghoraya cha ghoraya, Mahdevaya Mangalam. 8 Mangalam to the greatest of Gods,
Who has a mien which is ever peaceful, Who is the true Purusha, Who is fearful and not fearful.
Verse 9
श्रीचामुण्डाप्रेरितेन रचितं मङ्गलास्पदम् । तस्याभीष्टप्रदं शम्भोः यः पठेन्मङ्गलाष्टकम् ॥९॥
Mangalashtakam ethad vai Shambhorya Keerthayed dhine, Thasya mruthyu bhayam nasthi Roga peeda bhayam thadha. 9 Will not have fear of death and also fear of disease and bad times.
He who sings the praise of Lord Shiva using Mangalashtakam daily,
॥ इति श्री शिवमङ्गलाष्टकम् ॥
About this stotra
The Shiva Mangalashtakam (शिव मङ्गलाष्टकम्) is a beautiful hymn of eight verses offering auspicious greetings (Mangalam) to Lord Shiva. Mangala stotras are traditionally recited at the conclusion of stotra recitations, bhajans, or auspicious functions, where the devotee offers good wishes to the Lord.
Each verse of this ashtakam praises a different aspect of Lord Shiva — His blue neck (Nīlagrīva), His bull vehicle (Vṛṣārūḍha), His serpent garland (Vyālayajñopavīta), His three eyes of sun, moon and fire (Sūryacandrāgninetra), His form as the conqueror of death (Mṛtyuñjaya), His carrying of the river Ganga (Gaṅgādhara), His five faces (Pañcavaktra), and His ever-auspicious nature (Sadāśiva).
The hymn concludes by declaring that one who recites this Mangalashtakam daily in praise of Lord Shiva will be freed from the fear of death, disease, and all afflictions.
