About this stotra

The Paśupaty Aṣṭakam is a beautiful eight-verse hymn in praise of Lord Shiva as Paśupati — the Lord of all beings. Composed by King Sūri (Pṛthivīpati Sūri), each verse implores humanity to worship Girijāpati (the consort of Pārvatī), describing His myriad divine attributes: His three eyes, five faces, blue throat, crescent-moon-adorned head, serpent ornaments, and His role as the destroyer of sorrows, the remover of fear, and the bestower of liberation.

The hymn carries the refrain “bhajata re manujā girijāpatim” — “O humans, worship the Lord of Girijā (Pārvatī).” It emphasizes the futility of worldly attachments — neither parents, nor sons, nor wealth can save one from the clutches of death. Only devotion to Lord Shiva can grant true peace and liberation.

The tenth verse is the phalaśruti, declaring that whoever recites or hears this wonderful octet will dwell happily in Śivapurī (the realm of Shiva).
