Chapter 13: Kshetra Kshetrajna Vibhaga Yoga - The Field and Its Knower
Krishna teaches the distinction between the body-mind complex (the field) and the Self (the knower of the field). This discrimination is the essence of spiritual knowledge.
The Field
The field (kshetra) includes the body, senses, mind, intellect, ego, and the five subtle elements. It is everything that can be known - the entire objective world including one’s own body and mind.
The Knower of the Field
The knower (kshetrajna) is the Self, the pure consciousness that illumines the field. It is beyond all qualities, beginningless, and the supreme Brahman. It is the light of consciousness that makes all experience possible.
The Goal
The one who knows the distinction between the field and the knower attains liberation. This knowledge is the ultimate purpose of all spiritual practice.
Key Verses
Verse 11: Knowledge of the distinction between the field and the knower of the field is considered true knowledge.
Verse 23: The one who knows the supreme Self as the witness, the sustainer, the enjoyer, and the Lord - that person attains liberation.
