Chapter 8: Akshara Brahma Yoga - The Imperishable Brahman
Arjuna asks Krishna about the nature of Brahman, the Self, karma, and the process of death and rebirth. Krishna answers these profound questions.
Remembering at Death
Krishna gives the key teaching: whatever state of being one remembers at the time of death, that state one attains. The mind at death is shaped by the thoughts and practices of one’s entire life.
“Therefore, at all times, remember me and fight. With your mind and intellect fixed on me, you will surely come to me.”
The Two Paths
Krishna describes two paths after death:
- The path of light (devayana) - those who depart through the sun, never to return
- The path of darkness (pitriyana) - those who depart through the moon, destined to return
The one who knows the imperishable Brahman attains the highest. The practice of yoga throughout life ensures that the mind turns toward the supreme at the final moment.
Key Verses
Verse 7: Therefore, at all times, remember me and fight. With your mind and intellect fixed on me, you will surely come to me.
Verse 16: All worlds, up to the world of Brahma, are subject to return, O Arjuna. But those who attain me have no rebirth.
Verse 27: Knowing these two paths, no yogi is deluded. Therefore, be established in yoga at all times, O Arjuna.
