Chapter 4: Jnana Karma Sannyasa Yoga - Renunciation of Action in Knowledge
Krishna reveals the ancient lineage of yoga and his own divine nature. He teaches that whenever dharma declines and adharma rises, he incarnates to protect the good and destroy the wicked.
The Divine Incarnation
“Whenever there is a decline of dharma and a rise of adharma, O Arjuna, I manifest myself. For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the establishment of dharma, I am born age after age.”
These verses (4.7-8) are among the most beloved in the Gita. They reveal that the divine intervenes in history to restore cosmic order.
The Secret of Action
Krishna teaches the deep secret of action: action and inaction are not what they appear to be. The wise see inaction in action and action in inaction. One who acts without desire, without attachment, whose actions are burned in the fire of knowledge - such a one is called wise.
Knowledge as Fire
Knowledge burns away the results of actions. When the fire of Self-knowledge dawns, all accumulated karma is consumed. Just as fire turns wood to ash, knowledge turns karma to ash.
“Even if you are the most sinful of sinners, you will cross all sin by the boat of knowledge.”
Approaching the Teacher
The chapter ends with instruction on how to approach a teacher: with humility, service, and inquiry. The wise teacher, having realized the truth, can impart it to the sincere seeker.
