पञ्चतन्त्र
The Panchatantra is an ancient Indian collection of interrelated animal fables in Sanskrit, compiled by the sage Vishnu Sharma. It is one of the most widely translated non-religious texts in history.

भूमिका
प्रत्येक देश के साहित्य में उस देश की लोक-कथाओं का स्थान बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण होता है। भारत का साहित्य जितना पुराना है, उतनी ही पुरानी इसकी लोक-कथायें हैं। इन कथाओं में श्री विष्णुशर्मा द्वारा प्रणीत लोक-कथाओं का स्थान सबसे ऊँचा है। इन कथाओं का पाँच भागों में संकलन किया गया है। इन पाँचों भागों के संग्रह का नाम ही 'पञ्चतन्त्र' है।
पञ्चतन्त्र की कथायें निरुद्देश्य कथायें नहीं हैं। उनमें भारतीय नीतिशास्त्र का निचोड़ है। प्रत्येक कथा नीति के किसी भाग का अवश्य प्रतिपादन करती है। प्रत्येक कथा का निश्चित् उद्देश्य है।
ये कथायें संसार भर में प्रसिद्ध हो चुकी हैं। विश्व की बीस भाषाओं में इनके अनुवाद हो चुके हैं। सबसे पहले इनका अनुवाद छठी शताब्दी में हुआ था। तब से अब तक यूरोप की हर भाषा में इनका अनुवाद हुआ है।
पञ्चतन्त्र में भारत के सब नीति-शास्त्रों - मनु, शुक्र और चाणक्य के नीतिवाक्यों का सार कथारूप में दिया गया है।
यह पुस्तक उसी पंचतन्त्र का सरल हिन्दी रूपान्तर है। इस पुस्तक में नीति-भाग को साररूप से कहकर कथा-भाग को मुख्यता दी गई है।
